PROJECTS IN MT. BULLER

PROJECTS PHOTOGRAPHED BY TONY MILLER

This is a hybrid of wrapped concrete and expressed frame construction. 15m deep concrete piles carry a post-tensioned structural frame, floors and roof. The south facing walls are wrapped with insulated ironbark cladding to isolate the concrete substructure that retains heat and is the expressed finish. The north side concrete columns and spandrel beams pass through the double-glazed envelope. Each column was poured in separate halves to create a warm vertical joint at the window line and avoid thermal bridging.

The building is designed to hold several metres of snow (a Swiss proven thermal insulator). The roof is finished with a domed draining screed webbed with heat trace cable. The heat trace prevents ice damming allowing continual melting and run-off from the underside of the snow.
