The Gauge was developed by Lend Lease Development and is the first private-sector project completed new building to achieve a six-star Green Star "design" rating.
The concept of the desgin is to nuture a sense of ownership and pride in a workshop that is healthy, diverse and sensually stimulating.
The open planning allows more desk space, personalised lighting and storage, placing focus back on the individual while enhancing the larger dynamic of the team. Hierarchy in the workshop is subtle. The design was inspired by Louis Kahn - "The heart of a room is always 'me'" - and we wanted also to foster interaction between "me" and "you".
A large context is embraced - a space within a structure, a structure within a city. Melbourne's vibrant street culture coupled with its roots in traditional city planning inspired references to tree-lined boulevards. Staff travel through the stillness and calm of private space to the vitality of an active workspace, as though drawn by the aroma of coffee down a darkened alleyway, punctuated by shafts of light, to a sunny cafe. The driving philosophies were green design, advanced technology, integrity of construction methods and healthy materials with an inherent beauty. The material palette throughout has been chosen to be modest, honest and warm - unfinished concrete, stone, timber, wool, linen and greenery.
