Republic Towers

Soaring above the streets of downtown Melbourne, the cantilevering prow-like balconies of Republic Tower epitomize the bold urban statements for which the architects Fender Katsalidis are now celebrated. Indeed, this is only the latest in a series of high-rise projects that dot the Central Business District. The uncompromising structural skeleton of this 100-metre-high (330-foot) building is fashioned in untreated concrete, relieved only by stainless steel fittings, clear glass balustrades and dark tinted glazing. Its thirty-six storeys mostly accommodate apartments with single Living-dining spaces and three bedrooms opening off narrow terraces. But there are also several luxuriously appointed, multi-level penthouses at the top of the tower, including one designed by Nonda Katsalidis himself. An unusual feature of this project is the changing display of artworks at street level sponsored by the Visible Art Foundation Project set up by Katsatidis own development company.
