Ivy is located in the heart of Sydney’s tight urban fabric of George Street, the 20,000 m2 building offers a public landscaped oasis within a predominantly commercial domain. The project is initated by Merivale and designed by Hecker Phelan and Guthrie and Woods Bagot.
Born from a desire to flout luxury at every turn and to resist the conventional where possible, Ivy defies traditional interior typologies. The prodigious entertainment precinct emerged from collaboration and diversity, in the partnerships and the product. Hecker Phelan and Guthrie took a holistic approach to design - merging architecture and interior design, inverting interiors and exteriors with unexpected touches. Through the appropriation of building and furnishing materials, contrasting spaces and light, the subservience of architecture to interiors and vice versa was heavily dependent on achieving a series events that engage the senses. With over 20,000 square metres to work with, the challenge lay in establishing an Ivy "community." A multidisciplinary dialoguein design sought to include diverse yet cohesive materials, forms, detailing, lighting, scale and line of sight choices to connect the interactive indoor/outdoor spaces creating the playground of Ivy.
The integrated precinct comprises of
- nine boutique retail spaces
- six bars, two of which offer extensive outdoor spaces
- three specialist restaurants
- a specialist venue dedicated to live music performances
- an ulitmate function room which can hold 1000 people on one level. It also includes state of the art audio visual facilities and internet technology
- a two level office facility exclusively for the Merivale Group
- two 500 m2 penthouses
- a lifestyle complex comprising of a pool club and a day spa.

Hecker Phelan and Guthrie collaborated with Woods Bagot, Merivale and Cornwell Design, created a highly integrated outcome of architectural interiors, signage and hospitality.
