IMAX theatre

Sydney's IMAX theatre is a building of high aesthetic and technical merit. It is situated in the middle of a busy city freeway overpasses which lead cars to and from the west of Sydney.
It is an impressive large metal cald structure sitting proudly on the edge of Darling Harbour, yet at ground level it invites passers by with open arms.
The building is composed primarily of 2 arcs- the first being the backdrop for the movie screen and the other where the audience sits.
The building resembles an eye moving between the freeways like a streamlined shape through a wind tunnel.
Eye perception defines the juxtaposition of the 2 arcs
On one side, the worlds largest IMAX screen (30 x 36 mtrs) curves beypnd the observers peripheral vision - and on the other side 540 people are accomodated on a 24 dgree slope in the curved theatre.
Whilst the IMAX theatre has a remarkable continuity of form , it is not homogenised. The building seems willing to break free, as shown by the eatery at ground level, the glazed canopy, the chequered exterior bulge and the eccentric roof (offsetting arc overhang).
IMAX stretched beyond its full metal jacket and breathes life into darling Harbour.
