The development gold-rush along the shores of Sydney Harbour has resulted in a renewed life for the water's edge of the city - Darling Harbour in the early eighties, Cockle Bay and the King Street Wharf in the last decade, and now the re-development of the old piers and industrial sites from Walsh Bay to Woolloomoolloo.
A rare opportunity to live - not just wine and dine - right on the harbour exists in the Darling island development due for completion in 2004. Consisting of one hundred and seven apartments within three buildings, one, two and three bedroom apartments will be available, ranging from 82 to 352 square metres. This will be a fine place to reside indeed: the composition of the project team includes architects Peddle Thorp and Walker, Ruth Levine Designs and Chhada Siembieda Australia for the interiors, and builders Multiplex Living.
The architecture is sensitive to its location, acknowledging the Industrial history of the site, and prioritising the circulation, privacy and acoustic issues to do with the water's edge location.
Sydney's outdoor lifestyle is also a defining factor in the design of the apartments. The spacious apartments have balconies which continue the inside flooring to the outside, providing flexibility and the ability to extend the interior living and dining areas. The ability to open up or close in the balcony also makes the space very versatile. A system of shutters, sliding louvre screens and retractable fabric sun screens allow residents to regulate their view, sun and privacy, whilst energy efficient heating and air conditioning creates an adaptable environment.
And if the harbour landscape isn't enough, the site will feature generous parklands and a promenade, enhancing the community atmosphere of the development.
