Although a fit-out project, the opportunity was taken to advance our continuing research with interchangeable design principles that underpin much successful urban planning, irrespective of the scale of the project - 'the city is a project' and 'a project is a city'. There is therefore a memorable, multifunctional, open-ended, well-made 'civil place' juxtaposed with unlike spaces, spatial characters and densities. There is a generous town square with adjacent public rooms, thresholds to a dry street network that encourages choice of routes, relatively permanent infrastructure with non prescribed opportunities for individualisation, some very intimate domestic moments (the window seats), etc. The foyer modelled as a miniature town square is an abstraction of the building's address on Post Office Square. The connection is made more potent by the immediacy of the activity in the square below because the office is low in the rise of the building - a civic, (if subtle) attempt at an urban project within the confines of a very conventional interior design commission.
