The Joseph house was resumed by the Dept of Main Roads in Sydney some 40 years ago in order to build a fly-over expressway through the suburb.
Luckily this plan was abandoned and so the
house was saved.
The brief was to preserve the original character of the house while renovating it into a functioning contemporary home.
The house is essentially a 2 storey box set into a relatively steep slope. Its ground floor entry level extends through to the rear garden, backed by a lush sandstone ridge.
A central staircase accesses the upper floor which has 2 bedrooms, a bathroom and an open plan kitchen / dining area which is oriented north with splendid views across to Middle Cove Sydney.
The view from inside is framed by an entirely glazed front which Stephen Collins has amplified by introducing wider sliding glass doors - so that the supporting columns are less intrusive.
The interior fit-out was carried out with only minor adjustments to the architecture.
The aim was provide an interior that was cohesive to the architecture , in the hope that the building will last another 50 years.
The strength of the refurbishment was that it was driven not by a sentimental attachment to heritage, which would have resulted in a picturesque museum piece - but by recognition of the functionality and character of the original.
The house now resonates with both the character of its own period and of the present.
Furniture is sparse and was selected to resonate with the period rather than replicate it.
