Having only recently returned after 3 years abroad collaborating with artists and curators on a variety of exhibitions and art installations, the opportunity to work with Buzacott on a project that included an extensive private collection of artworks was an unexpected surprise for Rowe. Together, they came up with a new rational partis for the whole site, creating an axis from the smart new steel front gate, through the house and out onto a new deck at the rear where long benches wrap around an enormous outdoor table. Away went the informal English garden, cramped vestibule and the stucco arches on the front elevation and in came an orthogonal rigour that created a sequence of spaces that unfolded front to back.
Where the brick and stucco arches had been is now an enclosed verandah in steel and glass that compliments Lark's existing butterfly, roof, moving the arrival point forward one step in the entry sequence. The vestibule was knocked into the sitting room and the dining room behind was re-ordered with the installation of a new etched glass and steel bay. This allowed the table to be turned 90 degrees so it did not intrude into the sitting area and, externally, expressed the evolution of the building with three bays on the northern side of the house - an original bay, Rowe and Buzacott's new addition and, beyond an internal courtyard, the bay of Lark's kitchen/TV room extension.
An existing one level 1930's bungalow was remodelled in the early 1990's by Reg Lark Architect into a modern two level house. The work did not completed and the new owners, Andrew and Cathy Cameron wished to complete and extend the original concept extending some spaces, upgrading finishes, redesigning the approach from the street, provide undercover parking and new landscaping around the house. The design of this project was a collaboration between Stephen Buzacott and Grahame Rowe from the earliest stages. All aspects of the design derived from that collaboration and our very supportive clients. The existing "English Garden" landscaping was replaced with strong linear approach to the house past a robust steel framed carport and single species planting. The former arched front porch has been rebuilt and enclosed as a sunny living space with bifold doors opening both out to the garden and in to the sitting room. The interior of the house was opened up enlarging the living and dining rooms, and laying new blackbutt floor boards throughout to unify the living areas. All the domestic sliding doors were replaced with commercial section bifold doors to open the house out to the garden. At the rear a new semi-enclosed timber terrace was built level with the interior floor level extending the family room out into the garden. A new guest bathroom was provided along with a new separate bathroom for the two children's bedrooms on the ground floor. On the first floor a new dressing room was built off the master bedroom and the study was redesigned with new joinery. New furniture, especially for the dining and living rooms was design by Grahame Rowe to complement the overall design of the house. The exterior of the house was upgraded and repainted and a new steel palisade gate and fence was built along the street frontage.
