This house is a grand statement and addition to a modest Brisbane suburb.
The villa exploits the rich textural possibilities of intricately worked timber set into a finely finished concrete frame.
The site has been refashioned into a series of overlapping subsites, (both indoor and outdoor), with their interconnection across the climbing topography resembling experiences typical of 'terrain'. The landscape metaphor has been extended beyond physical representation to enable the everyday experience of occupation to be as if it were in a landscape.
A set of private rooms are gathered around, under and above the 'public' or 'memorable' space of the site - a large outdoor room. The house anticipates future generations by offering an adaptable planning scheme. The household might be a single family, shared singles/couples, extended family or home office.
Places for cooking, washing and resting benefit from experiences that can be sustained over the life of the building - the action of light, the reactivity to landscape and climate, the sense of defended territory, the elaboration of openings and material sensuality.
The core of the house is an atrium-like space that functions a sboth a lobby and an outdoor entertaining and living area.
Steps and corridors gravitate out from the open lobby area.
