PROJECTS IN SYDNEY

The entire lower level of this 19th century terrace is now a spacious, open-plan area, with formal living at the front of the house. This space flows into the formal dining area and connects, via a long, narrow kitchen on the right and an internal courtyard on the left, to the informal living spaces at the rear of the home. "To give extra dimension to the house, all the doors, from the front door through the kitchen door and out into the informal living area, are in a straight line. This allows you to see all the way from the front to the back of the house, creating a sense of space both in the front rooms and beyond," says the architect.

"Limiting the range of materials has allowed me to give the house a unified feel and ensure all areas link together. However, changing the emphasis and mix of materials from one space to the next helps to define each area and underline the differences in function. "Stainless steel in the formal areas creates a crisp, glamorous elegance, while in the kitchen it is highly functional. In the informal living spaces, a predominance of timber and white surfaces results in a more utilitarian look," he says.

The kitchen links the formal and informal parts of the house' and is designed to look a little like a furnished passageway. On one side, under the window overlooking the courtyard, is the sink and preparation area; along the other side is a long bank of white lacquered cabinetry. The cabinets conceal kitchen and laundry appliances, and extend seamlessly into another bank of cupboards, this time with a milk-glass finish, in the informal living area. These contain the television and other electronic equipment.

Upstairs, the master bedroom was relocated to the back of the house and the bathroom moved into a central position above the kitchen. All service areas are now contained in the narrowest part of the house adjacent to the courtyard, while living areas and bedrooms occupy the spaces in the front and back, taking advantage of the views and natural light.

The owners also added a conservatory-style study to the top of the house. This private retreat is designed to receive all-day sun, year-round. From the street, only a glimpse of it is visible over the front parapet of the building.
"It just peeks above the roofline, without dominating it or spoiling the appearance of the house," says Broadley.
