PROJECTS IN KANGAROO VALLEY

PROJECTS PHOTOGRAPHED BY BRETT BOARDMAN

When a Architect can incorporate artistic expression that is both an embodiment of personal knowledge and emotion with a reaction to physical forces both apparent in the immediate landscape and imagined as a force of humanity, it can be sublime. Peter Stutchbury's recently completed house in Kangaroo Valley on the New South Wales South Coast achieves this symbiotic expression. It is emotional, it is restrained, it is logical and, above all, it enhances the lives of its inhabitants. With an extensive body of work that is continually growing and refining to a comfortable confident sensibility, Stutchbury reflects a powerful ease in this project that has shed the self-consciousness of a creator. He has built a good honest house.

Stutchbury succinctly describes the environment of Kangaroo Valley as moody. It is a passionate and accurate response to a landscape that doesn't strike with the same initial force as the desert regions of Australia where the architect has worked in the past. Nor does it immediately charm as the lush Northern Beaches of Sydney can, where the architect's offices are situated and where some of his domestic work inhabits the landscape. Instead, Kangaroo Valley operates almost petulantly - as sunshine, heavy winds and clouds frequently overlap. Overlooking surrounding mountains, the site is located on a flattened plateau of a mountain that rises up on the south side. It is a powerfully peaceful place that encourages contemplation.

The clients were impressed when the architect brought his family to camp on the site. It struck a chord with the couple who had been camping there for several years. Their connection to the place was strong. Their desire to construct a more permanent structure on the site was well considered. The many years spent living on the land lightly had given the couple a love for where the sun rose and where the moon cast its reflected light.
