At the back of the house, Moore has created a pavilion extension that doesn't dwarf the simple formality of the original house. The two-level space is made up of a study, kitchen, dining room and living room .
Intrinsic to his design was a spectacular tallowwood tree, estimated to be 150 years old. To keep the impact on the tree's root system to a minimum, Moore constructed the living and study section of the pavilion from lightweight timber and set them on footings.
A simple skillion roof covers all of this.
"I saw the roof as a lid for the new stuff. And underneath that lid I could play with, and articulate, the masses," says Moore.
He does this by changing the floor levels and using half-height elements like the beautiful burgundy-coloured block 02 that masks off the cooking area. The horizontal banding and vertical lines remind many people of the 1950s, but Moore claims he is simply "interested in articulating space without putting up walls"
